“Refugee Voices”: June 20th, World Refugee Day / 20.06.2008
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) declared the 20th of June to be World Refugee Day in the year 2000. The 20th of June has been celebrated since then as a day that draws attention to the plight of refugees and that celebrates the courage of people who are forced to leave their countries and homes to find safety from persecution. This special edition of Refugee Voices focuses on World Refugee Day, portraying the lives and challenges faced by refugees in Turkey.
Thisissue features a comment on the recent death of refugees who had been forced by Turkish authorities to cross a fast-flowing river at the border between Turkey and Iraq. It also touches on the education of refugee children, includes the reflections of a refugee living in Konya, and presents drawings by refugee children.
