 | Roma in Turkey: We Are Here!
The book titled “We Are Here! Discriminatory Exclusion and Struggle for Rights of Roman in Turkey” was compiled as an outcome of the project “Promoting Roma Rights in Turkey” by the European Roma Rights Center (ERRC), the Helsinki Citizen’s Assembly (hCa) and Edirne Roma Association (EDROM). It draws on field research undertaken by the project partners and reflects upon the experiences gained during the project, the partners’ expertise in Roma rights advocacy, the promotion of civil society values and the grassroots mobilisation of Romani communities.

| Training on Roma Rights for NGOs in Istanbul/

Within the ‘Promoting Roma Rights in Turkey’ project, we have held previous training programs in Izmir, Mersin and Ankara. The last of the four planned trainings was held in Istanbul.

| Roma Rights Seminar for NGOs: Mersin/İzmir
May 2007
We held two seminars in Mersin and Izmir in May, within the project “Promoting Roma Rights in Turkey”. The first of the two was held on the 19th of May in Mersin and the other was held on the 26th May in Izmir. The seminars that focused on Roma rights were realized with the participation of representatives from NGOs working in the fields of: Human Rights; Law; City Planning; Women and Children Rights.

| Roma Rights for NGOs in Ankara

A seminar in relation to the rights of Roma community took place in Ankara on 24/03/2007. The framework of the seminar was shaped around the issues of developing citizenship rights of Roma people; revealing the violations of their rights; developing further the capacity of Romani organizations; and protecting Roma economic and social rights. The topics above were discussed within a framework that would activate a civil initiative along with making public authorities aware of Roma rights.

| Roma Project Mid-Term Assessment Meeting

European Roma Rights Centre - ERRC (Budapest) and Edirne Roma Association (EDROM) are in partnership with Helsinki Citizens Assembly in our project for promoting Roma rights in Turkey. The mid term assessment meeting of this project has taken place in Istanbul on 9-10 March 2007.

EDROM, ERRC and hCa have been in partnership in a project to develop the rights of Roma citizens living in Turkey. One of the main activities of the project is the training seminars provided for Roma organizations for capacity building.

| Strategic Litigation seminar for Roma Rights
22-24 November 2006
"Strategic Litigation for Human Rights – An Educational Seminar for Solicitors” was a 3-day seminar we undertook. The 3 day seminar took place within the framework of the Roma Rights project. The seminar is considered to be the first step in strategic litigation for defending Roma citizens’ rights through legal means. The seminar took place on 22-24 November 2006.

| Training Seminar For Roma Organization in Edirne/
21-23 July 2006
In context of the project “Promoting Roma Rights in Turkey”, we have organized a 3-day seminar in Edirne on 21-23 July 2006. The seminar took place in EDROM who is hCa’s partner in this project. The project had participants from other Roma organizations in different cities such as: Luleburgaz, Lalapasa, Muratli, Izmir, Adana, Mersin and Bartin.

| Civil Society Action to Halt Forced Evictions of Roma in Turkey
On 21 September 2006, the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), acting in partnership with the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, Accessible Life Foundation, Sulukule Romani Culture, Solidarity and Development Association, and EDROM, sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Turkey calling for the Prime Minister's urgent attention and interference to halt the ongoing execution of forced evictions of Romani communities until a reasonable solution to the housing situation of the affected families is found.

| "Promoting Roma Rights in Turkey" Project
The project, implemented in partnership with European Roma Rights Center (ERRC) from Budapest and Edirne Association for Research of Romani Culture and Solidarity, seeks to build capacity of Roma and other civil society actors to engage in effective advocacy for the rights of Roma and to raise awareness in Turkish society about the human rights problems facing the Romani population.
